Grant & Carl Tens and Fives Challenge for Neve !

Captains Challenge in 2010

About Us

Over the last couple of years your intrepid adventure heroes, Grant Wyatt and Carl Beetham, have thrown themselves head-long and head-first into various escapades including the UK’s most difficult mountain marathon, cycling Land’s End to John O’Groats, swimming all Lake District waters (yeah, failed that one!) and various marathons, quadrathlons & triathlons, culminating in successful Ironman attempts. Not to be outdone they’re at it again, only this time the silliness is of their own making and beggars belief in its, well, its silliness!

In any given year people up and down the land complete The Three Peaks where the largest mountains in each mainland country (Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike & Snowdon) are travelled to and ‘bagged’ in a cumulative time of 24 hours. Countless cyclists indulge their passion for two wheels and undertake big distances, many finally cracking the 900 miles on the aforementioned end2end challenge. The real crazies take to the water and dream of swimming the channel. So, what about a bit of all three?

Yep, this year’s adventure is going to comprise The Three Peaks, cycling the 550 miles between them and throwing in a swim across (and back) Lake Windermere. Oh, and they’re doing it on a 1970s tandem that weighs as much as your average modern car, and all within a five day target. For the record, that’s 10,000ft of ascent & descent, 550 miles of cycling and a bit of a dip in freezing cold water that’ll still be under 10 degrees and it’s why they’re going to name it the ‘Tens & Fives Challenge’. Oh, and did I mention the five day target? On a tandem. In May.

Rather than burdening their trusty steel packhorse with any further weight than themselves they’ll be aided and abetted by drinki...er, training partner and all round good-egg, Ty Elleker, who’s taken a week off work to ferry the support vehicle around, mending punctures, cooking sausages and emptying colostomy bags as well as Tony Marsh, who says he'll do 'the running, some of the cycling, and maybe the swim', we reckon he'll do it all.

Now the rub! Oh yes, you’ve got to put your hand in your pocket and shell-out some of your hard-earned on their worthy ‘good cause’, the continued sponsorship of little Neve Dandy -www.stayclosetoneve.com - who has a shocker of a condition (Dravet Syndrome) and the more we can all support her and her family the better. Rest assured this task is not, by anyone’s stretch of imagination, a relative walk-in-the-park and every day is going to hurt. A lot. There’s a minimum of twelve-fourteen hours in the saddle each day before you even begin to think of the mountains and the lake. It equates to something similar to undertaking an Ironman each and every day, for five consecutive days, and every pound you donate will be more than paid for in their pain! So, without further ado, dig deep, cough-up and make Grant & Carl feel it’s almost worthwhile. Probably.

26/05/2012 - A few pictures taken with Neve and the tandem

27/05/2012 - Uneventful drive to Fort William, got here 7pm.  We stopped Carlisle and credit to Stewie from the Bluerare in Carlisle who, when we asked for big helpings explaing why we needed them, he handed over a tenner for Neve.  What a star.  Of course, when I say uneventful, we have about 5 satnav devices between us and we still got lost 3 times.  So just over 4 hours to midnight and our start.  We've been to the visitors' centre, and walked the first bit of the route; we're ready to go.  We're sitting having a drink, and looking out over Loch Linnhe. See image of Stewie and a view up the first part of tonight's climb.

28/05/2012 - What a day.Set off up Ben Nevis at 2 minutes past midnight.  Managed to run for first 1m and 33s, then it became to steep.  Proceeded to the top with a brisk walk.  The top of BN is covered in several feet of snow, and after about 5 mins hanging around at the top we were all suddenly freezing.  Decided to 'dash' down, mostly walking, but some jogging on the flat bits.  How fell runners run this stuff at pace we know not.  Anyway, 4:25 later we woke Ty (sleeping in the car).  The midges were terrible, but we changed, and tried to get 1/2 hours' kip.  Saddled up the tandem and we were away with Tony on his single bike.  Honestly, we lasted about 25 miles on the tandem.  It was the toughest 25 miles I have cycled, peddling like crazy to do 10 and 11 mph, after 25 miles we were all knackered.  Tony had a go on the tandem (swopping with Carl) but it was just impossible.  Unanimously agreed to switch to single bikes (pedals, spindles, seats, etc - which took an hour) and we were away again, about 80m to go.  We stopped in Tyndrum for breakfast and Loch Lomond for a swim, not many people in the water, but it was wonderful.  The last 10 miles into East Kilbride (to get south of Glasgow) were painful in the extreme, but some 8.5 hours of cycling after we started, we pulled into the B&B.  Food (lots), beer (1) and when my head hit the pillow I was asleep in 4 seconds, only to be woken by Carl this morning at 6:30am about 2 mins later.  So we're setting off this Tuesday morning (29/05) with 155 miles to go, whee ha !

29/05/2012 - What a day.  After a massively long kip (9 hours) we set off on the bikes from East Kilbride (near Glasgow) to the base of Scafell pike. En route we saw a wedding horse and carriage, some incredible hills (25% gradient, I kid you not) and some awesome country-side.  After almost 10 hours of cycling (and 12 hours elapsed) we arrived 141 miles later at the Old Dungeon Ghyll, from whence we start our run at 4:45am tomorrow morning.  What a day, I wouldn't have changed it for the anything.

30/05/2012 - Now this was some day.  Up at 4:15am, change into running gear, drive 1/2 hour, and start up Scafell Pike at 5:15am.  Now *this* is a mountain, oh my word, is it tought.  We've climbed it from other approaches before but nothing prepared us for the pain. 2.5 hours up and just over 2 hours down, with as much running as we could.  The hotel (breakfast finished at 10, we got there at 10:10) kindly prepared us the most incredible feast, and feeling 2kg heavier we headed down to Windermere lake at midday for a little refreshing dip.  With the man in the rubberduck leading the way, we swam out into the lake centre, and across to the other side.  Just over 1km, and we decided it was only appropriate to swim back again.  The water was warm (ish), about 15C, but with wetsuits that is great, and we packed our stuff back into the car, after some tea and milktart to go back to the base of Scafell Pike (where we ended our ride yesterday) to continue.  A simple and fast ride down into Preston and Carl's mom's place.  64 miles, and we were flying (average 17mph), what a great set of roads, rounded off with some more tea, a pint and an excellent meal at a nearby pub (just opened yesterday).  Now it's off to bed, we're waking at 5am for brekkies at 5:15 and hopefully we'll be turning the pedals by 6am...

31/05/2012 - WE HAVE FINISHED.  Up early this morning, 5:15am for breakfast at Carl's Mom's place; she is the biggest star, incredible breakfast and a packed lunch that was delicious.  We were turning the pedals by 6:15am.  Unfortunately, it was pouring down with rain, and by 6:18am we were soaked.  So the first 2 hours of riding was not pleasant.  After that the weather cleared slightly, and the rest of the day was intermittent rain, but it was a long, long slog, 102 miles with rain, and a huge headwind for the last 50 miles.  There was a stretch of road on the 5105 which we completed at about 9 mph average, it was horrible.  A final little climb up Llanberis pass (we climbed the short side, and went down the long side, thank goodness), and at 4:15pm we found ourselves in the Snowdon car park.  The original plan was to walk up Snowdon tomorrow, and drive home, but we decided we'd pop up and down today, which we did, 3.5 hours, although sadly the top third of the mountain was completely covered in mist, so the view from the top was exactly nothing.  Now off to get our roast chicken dinner and a beer.

Thanks to EVERYONE who has donated on www.stayclosetoneve.com or via cash/cheque, and please keep the monies coming in...

We'll be chatting tonight about what our next adventure should be, not sure how we're going to top this one without ending in hospital..
